Daphne Karstens
On the small beach on Utopia Island, an ode to the honeycomb rises. A technological feat of nature, developed by bees and for centuries an inspiration for scientists and architects, who embraced the complexity of the honeycomb because it so beautifully shows the complexity of natural structures. Which is why, from childhood onwards, the bee is not just an insect, but for almost everyone a character from nature – sympathetic, recognisable, cuddly (despite its sting) and iconic.
HIVE is an ode to the complexity of nature and an introduction to the beauty of the bee - as a building animal, as the brightest architect of the animal kingdom, and as an indispensable part of our Dutch landscape.

About the artist
Daphne Karstens (1991) combines sculpture and costume design to create experimental, yet wearable, pieces for the human body and installations. Her work centres on experimentation – on the materials, forms and structures which can shape themselves in countless ways to the human body.
